I came across Kuroda Tsubasa’s beautiful pompoms on the internet by chance. A few years ago, letter pompoms, flower patterned pompoms had taken over the internet, and the craze had just faded down. What Tsubasa has done goes beyond that. Her works are the most intricate ones I’ve ever seen.
I contacted Tsubasa, it turns out that she has a Japanese book on how to make these beautiful animal pompoms, but her book is currently only available in Japanese and sold on Amazon Japan, you may check out the link here. Normally Amazon Japan rarely ships overseas. I do not know any Japanese, but I will be trying to acquire the book, and am willing to learn how to make these beautiful pompoms.
I got to learn more details about Kuroda Tsubasa when I contacted her. Tsubasa was born in 1981, in a town called Shizuoka. After graduating from the Tokyo Fine Arts and Music University’s Painting department, she started making handcrafts. She runs multiple workshops and gives craft classes on a regular basis. When making pompoms, she decided to try something new and unusual. By experimenting with yarn, she got to create a lot of patterned pompoms; eventually she was able to make these amazing animal pompoms. In 2014, she came up with her pompom forest animals brooch collection. Her books are flying off the shelves in Japan. I hope her books get translated soon, because I have fell in love with her work and would love to give it a try ! I’ll be the first in line to buy her books for sure.
