Confession, I love concrete objects. The fact that it’s a very versatile and malleable material, the clean lines make my heart melt. I’m glad that my love for concrete does not go as far as liking concrete buildings, but I do love home decor with concrete elements. The apartment I live in is rather small, but I hope to add more concrete objects for decoration in the long run.
Elisa Self has made the mini-versions of the concrete planters I keep seeing in furniture and design stores around Taipei. If you want to make similar mini-planters and pen holders, all you need to do is create a few simple moulds. It could be anything; a yoghurt container, a paper cup, or even an old plastic drum. Just make sure it’s disposable. Elisa, used round food containers and single use plastic cups as moulds. She first poured 1-2 cm of her concrete mixture into her plastic containers, and then proceeded to put her plastic cups int he middle. She poured the rest of the concrete into the space that remained between her containers and cups and continued to do so until she achieved the height she wanted for her containers.
After the concrete solidified, she removed them from the moulds; the results are amazing, now she has beautiful succulent planters and was able to put them on her window sill. I just love these planters; they are so cute. I’ll be experimenting with concrete soon and will keeping you guys posted.
